Taking care of yourself should not wait until something hurts. This guide sums up which checkups a woman needs by age, which symptoms should not wait, and what can be handled without an appointment in Pasadena, in Spanish or English and without health insurance.

Which checkups does a woman need, and how often?

  • Pap smear: from age 21, every 3 years if normal; between 30 and 65 it can be combined with an HPV test and spaced to every 5 years. It catches changes in the cervix before they become cancer.
  • HPV test: from age 30, alone or together with the Pap smear.
  • Sexually transmitted infection tests: every year if you have a new partner or more than one, or whenever there are symptoms.
  • Blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol: a yearly blood test from age 40, or earlier with diabetes, excess weight or family history.
  • Thyroid: when there is tiredness, weight or cycle changes without explanation; it is more common in women.
  • Mammogram: from age 40, every one or two years as your physician advises. We do not perform it at the clinic, but we guide you on where to go.

Which symptoms should not wait?

Bleeding outside your period or after menopause, discharge with odor or itching, pain when urinating or during sex, pelvic pain that does not ease, a lump in the breast, or a late period when pregnancy is possible. None of these needs an appointment: you can come the same day, 9 AM to 9 PM.

What gynecological care does the clinic offer?

In a single visit you can have a Pap smear, vaginal and urine cultures, sexually transmitted infection tests, a pregnancy test and a pelvic ultrasound. Vaginal and urinary infections are treated that day. For menopause, we assess symptoms and treatment options. Everything is explained in Spanish or English, and results are reviewed with you.

What family planning options are there?

A judgment-free visit to choose a method: pills, injection, patch, ring or the subdermal implant. We also remove the implant when you no longer want it or it has expired. If you are trying to conceive, the preconception visit reviews vaccines, folic acid and conditions to control beforehand.

How much do women's health services cost in Pasadena?

The prices we publish are those of our current promotions. The Complete Women's Checkup costs $179 and includes a pelvic ultrasound, Pap smear, urine test and a free medical visit. The Women's Intimate Health package costs $69 and includes an intimate culture, a medical visit and a free urine test. For other services we give you the price by phone. No health insurance is required.

What should I bring, and how should I prepare?

A photo ID, your medication list and the date of your last period. For a Pap smear, avoid sex, douching and vaginal suppositories for 48 hours beforehand, and try not to come during your period. For a pelvic ultrasound, arrive with a full bladder.
