The contraceptive implant in the arm has an expiration date, and it can also be removed earlier if you no longer want it. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Pasadena removal is done at the clinic, under local anesthesia, in a short visit and with no appointment.
When does the implant need to be removed?
The subdermal implant used in the United States is approved for 3 years; after that it must be removed or replaced. It is also removed earlier if you want to get pregnant, if irregular bleeding or side effects do not suit you, or if you decide to switch methods. You do not have to wait for it to expire to ask for removal.
What is the procedure like?
The implant is located by touch on the inner arm, the area is cleaned and local anesthesia is applied. Through an incision of a few millimeters, the physician removes the rod with forceps. It takes 10 to 20 minutes. No stitches are needed: it is closed with sterile adhesive strips and a pressure bandage is placed for about 24 hours. You walk out and can go on with your day.
Does it hurt?
The prick of the anesthesia is what you feel most; after that, only pressure. In the following days there may be a bruise and tenderness, managed with ice and a common pain reliever. If the implant is very deep or cannot be felt, it is not attempted blind: an ultrasound is ordered to locate it and, if necessary, you are referred to a specialist.
When does fertility return?
Quickly: the hormone leaves the body within days and you can ovulate in the first month. If you are not trying to get pregnant, another method must start the same day as removal; at the clinic we start pills or the injection at that same visit.
What care is needed afterward?
Keep the pressure bandage on for 24 hours and the adhesive strips for 3 to 5 days, do not get the area wet the first day, avoid lifting with that arm for a couple of days, and watch for signs of infection: spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever. With that, the scar stays minimal.
How much does implant removal cost in Pasadena?
We give you the price by phone at (281) 747-8817. No health insurance is needed; we accept cash and cards. If you want to start another method at the same visit, it is quoted separately.
What should I bring?
A photo ID and, if you have it, the card or record with the date the implant was placed and which arm it is in. Wear clothing that leaves the arm free. If you take blood thinners or are allergic to local anesthesia, say so at the front desk.
