How do I know if it is an allergy or a cold?

An allergy causes no fever or body aches, lasts weeks or months, itches (nose, eyes, roof of the mouth) and gets worse in certain places or seasons: outdoors, when dusting, around pets, in spring or fall. A cold lasts one or two weeks, can cause fever and does not itch. When symptoms return every year in the same season, it is almost always an allergy.

Which allergies are treated at the clinic?

Seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis (pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander), allergic conjunctivitis, hives and welts, contact or insect-bite dermatitis, and the cough and wheezing that allergies trigger in people with asthma. Food and drug allergies are evaluated at the visit and, if they require specialized testing, we guide the referral to an allergist.

How is the cause identified?

Through a detailed history: when the symptoms start, where, what improves them and what makes them worse, and whether there are allergic relatives. In many cases that is enough to know the trigger and start treatment. When confirmation is needed, a blood test for antibodies to the most common allergens in this area can be ordered.

What treatment is given?

According to the main symptom: newer-generation antihistamines that do not cause drowsiness, a steroid nasal spray for congestion, eye drops, skin creams and, in hives flare-ups, fast-acting medication. If there is asthma, the inhaler is adjusted. The treatment is explained with schedule and duration, and reviewed in a few weeks to adjust.

When is it an emergency?

Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, dizziness or hives spreading fast after eating something, an insect sting or a medication can be a severe reaction (anaphylaxis): call 911 or go to the emergency room right away. If it has happened to you before, ask at the visit about an epinephrine auto-injector.

How do I reduce symptoms at home?

Shower and change clothes when you come in from outside during pollen season, keep windows closed and use air conditioning with a filter, wash sheets in hot water every week against dust mites, use mite-proof pillow covers, control humidity to prevent mold and keep pets out of the bedroom. Each of these measures lowers the dose of medication you need.
