Which wounds are treated at the clinic?

Scrapes and shallow cuts; first-degree and small second-degree burns; blisters; superficial bites and stings; wounds that were stitched and need a dressing change or stitch removal; and chronic wounds such as foot ulcers in people with diabetes or leg ulcers from poor circulation, which need repeated dressings and monitoring.

What is a wound-care visit like?

The wound is washed with sterile solution, debris and dead tissue are removed if present, the antiseptic or dressing suited to the wound type is applied and it is covered. The physician checks for signs of infection and decides whether an antibiotic is needed. You are shown how to change the dressing at home and how often to return: simple wounds every 2 to 3 days until closed; ulcers according to progress.

Which signs point to infection?

Redness spreading beyond the edge, warmth, swelling, pain that increases instead of easing, pus or a bad smell, red streaks running up the skin and fever. With any of these, come that day; a skin infection treated early clears with an antibiotic at home, treated late it may need a hospital.

What should I do with a burn before coming?

Cool it under fresh running water for 10 to 20 minutes, do not use ice, toothpaste, butter or home remedies, do not pop blisters and cover with a clean cloth. Burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals or joints, those larger than the palm of the hand or those that leave the skin white or painless belong in the emergency room.

Why is my wound not closing?

Diabetes with high sugar, poor circulation, constant pressure on the area, infection, tobacco and low protein delay healing. When a wound has gone more than two weeks without improving, besides treating it the cause is looked for: a glucose and blood test and control of diabetes and circulation are part of the treatment.

What is the visit like?

Walk in from 9 AM to 9 PM with the wound covered by a clean cloth. Bring your medication list and, if it is an old wound, tell us how long you have had it and what you have put on it. If it needs stitches, it is done under stitches; if it has pus collected, under abscess drainage. If you do not remember your last tetanus shot, it is reviewed that day.
