Most sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at first, and the only way to know is the test. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Pasadena it is done with no appointment, in Spanish or English, with a confidential result and treatment at the same clinic when needed.

Which STD tests are done?

Chlamydia and gonorrhea on a urine sample or swab; syphilis and HIV on blood; hepatitis B and C on blood; and, when there are sores or discharge, evaluation for herpes, trichomonas and other infections. The physician chooses the panel based on your symptoms, your practices and your last test; you do not need to ask for them one by one.

When should I get tested?

Once a year if you are sexually active; every 3 to 6 months if you have new or multiple partners; whenever a partner tells you about a positive result; at the start of pregnancy; and with symptoms such as unusual discharge, burning when urinating, sores, warts or pelvic pain. Keep the window period in mind: a test done a few days after exposure can be negative; for HIV and syphilis it is worth repeating at 4 to 6 weeks and at 3 months.

Is it confidential?

Yes. The result is yours: it is not shared with your partner, your family or your employer, and no immigration status is asked. What if it is positive?

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and trichomonas are cured with antibiotics prescribed at the same clinic. Herpes and HIV are not cured but are controlled with treatment; for HIV, we guide the referral to a specialized center where the medication may be free or low cost. In every case, recent partners should be told so they can get tested too and reinfection is avoided.

How do I prevent an STD?

A condom every time is the only thing that prevents most of them. In addition, the HPV vaccine protects against the strains that cause cervical cancer and warts, and the hepatitis B vaccine is given at the clinic: see vaccines. If you had a high-risk HIV exposure in the last 72 hours, go to the emergency room right away to be evaluated for prophylaxis.
